about lighten lab

Our goal is to translate proven research on the mental load into simple practices and tools that make every day feel lighter.

we're an
Academic lab
Everything we create is grounded in proven research and thousands upon thousands of data points. Led by Professor Leah Ruppanner, our work is informed by decades of academic study into mental load — not just our own assumptions.
we're made for
everyday life
We turn complex research into simple, relatable tools anyone can use. We believe managing your mental load shouldn’t feel....well, like an extra mental load.
We’re an academic lab using research-backed methods to help manage and lighten your mental load.

Lighten Lab is founded by Professor Leah Ruppanner, a Professor of Sociology at the University of Melbourne and Visiting Professor at Vanderbilt University. Her research into gender, work, and mental load forms the backbone of everything we do. Her latest book, Drained, is available now as research-backed guide to understanding why you're exhausted and what to do about it.
